  10. Soon after this experimental discovery, H. A. Lorentz was able to explain the Zeeman effect and even could predict that light emitted along the field direction consists of a doublet of circularly polarized light with opposite helicity. This was soon afterwards confirmed by Zeeman. Anomalous splitting was further pointed out, but was not explained until the discovery of the spin by Goudsmit and Uhlenbeck in 1925. The role of the spin-orbit coupling is essential to yield a detailed understanding of the magneto-optical effects.
  11. Even if Cmxd has not been of current interest in the past, many fundamental studies in X-ray optics have been focused on polarisation-related phenomena. In other words, the interest for polarized X-rays was not neglected but this field has had no chance for a widespread development because of the lack of intense sources which become available only with the storage rings in the early 1970's. As usual, the lack of such a tool fora long time lead to a kind of sterilization of the scientific mind. Since the early beginning of synchrotron radiation as X-ray sources, there has been no experimental obstacle left for the development of Cmxd.
  12. Stumm Von Bordwehr R., Ann. Phys. Fr. 14 (1990) 377-466. In his historical review of X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, R. Stumm von Bordwehr recalls us, citing Segre, that the burst of enthousiasm which followed Rontgen's discovery of X-rays on the 8th of November 1895 was so large that one year later, more than 1 000 papers were published on the subject. In some respects what happened then is something rather comparable to the wave which, recently shook up the scientific community when the high Tc superconductor discovery spread over the world. Many of very well-known scientists, Perrin, Laue, Bragg, de Broglie turned their attention to this new area and very significant discoveries emerged : X-ray fluorescence, absorption edges which as soon as 1901, appeared to be specific to each atom.
