Abstract
We consider conventional relaxation dynamics for surfaces, both evaporation dynamics and surface diffusion. We point out that the cusp singularity of the surface free energy implies that the relaxation dynamics has to be treated as a free boundary value problem. On this basis we predict, under appropriate conditions, the spontaneous formation of facets and a finite time of healing for the high symmetry surface.
