Abstract
A disordered cubic network of springs is introduced as a model of 3-dimensional tenuous networks. It presents an unusual elastic behavior since it does not resist shear but only shear coupled to compression by a type of bending rigidity. Numerical simulations of the elastic behavior of random packings of hard spheres and of disordered cubic networks show a similar stress distribution, which can be partially understood by considering the appearance of buckling.
