Abstract
A method of simulating dissipative effective media with both dielectric and magnetic
material properties is presented. As far as particles with random distribution are concerned, the
effective material properties of mixtures depend only on the volume fractions and the bulk values of the
materials involved. The numerical simulations have been performed for the three-dimensional case and
an algorithm was used, which leads to a correct representation of Maxwell's equations in a discrete
vector space without any approximation. A formula was derived that describes the behavior of the
mixture for random distribution of the particles. A physical interpretation of the effective
behavior is given, based on percolation theory.
